Paper/ poly cups are primarily made from paper fibre with a thin layer of polyethylene (PE) plastic to give the cups its waterproof characteristics, so that it may be able to hold your cup of coffee for you.

These cups are recycled by Mpact at the Springs Paper Mill in Johannesburg. The cups go through a hyrapulping method where the PE plastic is separated from the paper fibre and the two are then recycled separately.

The paper in your paper cup can be recycled up to 7 times.
